About 1,000 protesters gathered on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder on Thursday evening before marching up Broadway toward the University of Colorado while stopping in intersections to block traffic.
They chanted various slogans, but the general tone of the gathering was a backlash against President-elect Donald Trump and what many protesters feel are bigoted comments he and his followers made during the election.
Protesters have taken to the streets of multiple American cities since Tuesday, and Thursday night’s demonstration comes after demonstrations by students at Boulder and Fairview high schools in Boulder and at Centaurus High School in Lafayette.
Boulder and CU police kept an eye on the protesters as they moved south on Broadway and eventually onto U.S. 36. Police briefly shut down U.S. 36 near Baseline and diverted vehicles as a safety precaution.
Police followed the group as it turned back to the north and eventually returned to Pearl Street, where the demonstration began earlier in the evening. Boulder Police Cmdr. Jack Walker said there were no arrests, no tickets and no injuries that he knew of as of 10:30 p.m.
