At least four people were detained today at a rally on Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall at which about two dozen members of a self-described “Western chauvinist” group were met by roughly 200 counterprotesters.
Several smoke bombs were thrown at the mid-day event, although it was not initially clear by whom.
Many of the counterprotesters were clad in black and masked, some of them beating drums. The Proud Boys contingent was largely male, and many of them were waving American flags, and wearing shirts bearing slogans such as “Don’t tread on me.”
They also invoked a favored slogan of President Donald Trump by vowing to “make America great again.”
About two dozen Boulder police monitored the event, some of them outfitted in riot gear. A police command post was established directly north of the Boulder County Courthouse.
